Southeast Island School District (SISD), a Regional Educational Attendance Area, operates eight remote schools on Prince of Wales & Baranof Island and one school on the mainland in Southeast Alaska. There are 134 students in the district. It is our vision to create a technology-rich and safe learning environment for all students. Our secondary students depend on distance learning through video conferencing as a cornerstone in their education. It is our goal to expand vocational and career opportunities for students.
The economy of all SISD communities is closely tied to commercial fishing and/or timber harvesting on the 17 million acre Tongass National Forest. Seasonal tourism-related employment also supplements the economy of the area. |
