SISD is located on Prince of Wales and Baranoff Islands and encompasses all of the unincorporated areas in Southeast Alaska. There are eight school sites, Hollis, Howard Valentine, Hyder, Kasaan, Naukati, Port Alexander, Port Protection, and Thorne Bay. Schools range from one to seven teachers with a student population spanning from 12 to 75 students in the current school year. In addition to the eight school communities SISD offers a correspondence program to students living on float houses and in remote isolated areas in the Southeast.
Each school has a local Advisory School Council (ASC) that is under the umbrella of a regional school board. ASC’s provide input and feedback that informs decision-making at the school, district and school board level(s).
SISD communities have been heavily impacted by the decline in logging and fishing industries. A recent survey finds SISD schools and communities at an 83% poverty level. Resources available in SISD communities vary significantly. All communities have float plane air service.
