The Southeast Island School District (SISD) has updated the Student Handbook to better support student learning, ensure safety, and maintain compliance with state and federal requirements. Please take a moment to review the following important changes:

Opt-Out Requests for Activities, Lessons, or Field Trips
Parents/guardians may now choose to opt their student out of specific classroom activities, lessons, or field trips by submitting a written request to the school office prior to the scheduled activity.
- If a student opts out, an alternative assignment will be provided so the student can meet the related learning objectives.
- The alternative assignment must be completed within the teacher’s designated timeframe in order to receive credit.

Personal Devices and Electronics Policy
To comply with this year’s funding requirements and maintain an effective learning environment:
- Cell phones and personal electronics may only be used before school, during lunch, and after school.
- No personal devices are allowed in class.
- Teaching staff will enforce this policy consistently.
- Portable electronic devices (radio/cassette/disc players, gaming devices, iPods/mp3 players, cell phones, etc.) are not permitted during school hours outside of lunch.
- Music use is allowed only under direct teacher supervision:
• Listening may occur on district-assigned computers with headphones.
• Music use will be connected to positive student behavior and instructional purposes only.

Challenge Exams – Quick Guide for Students
SISD encourages students to challenge themselves academically. Challenge Exams allow students to earn high school credit by demonstrating mastery of course material.
How It Works:
- Ask your principal about available Challenge Exams.
- Apply at least 4 weeks before the scheduled test date.
- The exam covers the entire course content.
- Students who score 85% or better will receive a “Pass” on their transcript.
• This credit will not impact GPA.
Additional Information:
- Not every course offers a challenge exam option.
- Each course may only be challenged once.
- A small testing fee may apply.

📢 NEW: Online Student Registration
We are excited to announce that SISD now offers ONLINE student registration to make the process faster and more convenient for families.
✅ Families can complete registration from home through our secure online system.
✅ If you experience any problems or have questions, please come into the school office—our staff will gladly assist you and make sure your student is registered correctly.

Please take advantage of this new tool to simplify your registration process!
We ask that all families review these updates with their students to ensure understanding and cooperation.

Copies are also available at your school office and on the SISD website.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us create safe, productive, and challenging learning environments for all students.

Dear families and educators of the Southeast Island School District community: We are writing to inform you of a recent development related to the cybersecurity incident PowerSchool experienced in December 2024. PowerSchool is aware that a threat actor has reached out to multiple school district customers in an attempt to extort them using data from the previously reported December 2024 incident. PowerSchool does not believe this is a new incident. Please be assured that both PowerSchool and Southeast Island School District are taking this situation very seriously. PowerSchool has informed us they are working with cybersecurity experts to thoroughly assess this development and have reported it to law enforcement in both Canada and the United States. As a reminder, following that incident PowerSchool also offered and made widely available credit monitoring and identity protection services for a period of two years to students and faculty of Southeast Island School District regardless of whether they were individually involved. We encourage all those who were offered these services to take advantage of them: For individuals in the U.S.: https://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/notice-of-united-states-data-breach/ For individuals in Canada: https://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/notice-of-canada-data-breach/ As was reported earlier this year, PowerSchool made the decision to pay a ransom because they believed it to be in the best interest of their customers and the students and communities they serve. As is always the case with these situations, there was a risk that the bad actors would not delete the data they stole, despite assurances and evidence that were provided by PowerSchool. We wanted to share this update as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency. We remain committed to working closely with PowerSchool and law enforcement to provide support in any way we can. Sincerely, Rod Morrison Superintendent
