Dear families and educators of the Southeast Island School District community: We are writing to inform you of a recent development related to the cybersecurity incident PowerSchool experienced in December 2024. PowerSchool is aware that a threat actor has reached out to multiple school district customers in an attempt to extort them using data from the previously reported December 2024 incident. PowerSchool does not believe this is a new incident. Please be assured that both PowerSchool and Southeast Island School District are taking this situation very seriously. PowerSchool has informed us they are working with cybersecurity experts to thoroughly assess this development and have reported it to law enforcement in both Canada and the United States. As a reminder, following that incident PowerSchool also offered and made widely available credit monitoring and identity protection services for a period of two years to students and faculty of Southeast Island School District regardless of whether they were individually involved. As is always the case with these situations, there was a risk that the bad actors would not delete the data they stole, despite assurances and evidence that were provided by PowerSchool. We wanted to share this update as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency. We remain committed to working closely with PowerSchool and law enforcement to provide support in any way we can. Due to the heavy snow and slick roads, all schools will have a late start at 10:00 AM today. Buses will run 1.5 hours later than their usual scheduled times. This adjustment should provide some additional time for the road crews to improve conditions. Staff, please report to your workstations by 9:30 AM. Supporting Our Community Together! Southeast Island School District and POW Island Food Bank are excited to announce a weekly meal distribution program until mid-August 2024. Ensuring that every child has access to nutritious meals throughout the summer! Program Details: Start Date: June 14, 2024 End Date: August 15, 2024 Day & Time: Every Friday, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, Location: Southeast Island School District Parking Lot In Thorne Bay (an alternate pick-up The location for parents will be the POW Food Bank Distribution Center in Naukati Bay, down the hill to the right of the Naukati School, and each Saturday morning starting 06/15/2024, 9 am-noon.) Who Can Participate: ● Eligibility: Children between the ages of 2 years and 18 years old. ● Sign-In Requirement: A parent, guardian, or older sibling must sign for the receipt of meals for each child in the family. ● Self-Signature: Children aged 7 years and older can sign for themselves.
