Portrait of Michaela Larsen
Michaela Larsen

I recently became the Lead Teacher at Port Alexander School, having lived in the community and worked for Southeast Island School District the last four years in the roles of Paraprofessional, Preschool Teacher, Alaska Tides to Tongass Science and Arts Academy magnet school Coordinator and Instructor, and, now, K-12 Teacher.  This fall I will receive a Master's degree in Secondary Education-- History content area (a passion), though I am excited to be teaching all subjects.

I was born and raised in Southeast Alaska (Juneau and Sitka) and although I have lived and worked in various states and countries, always considered this part of the world my home.  My husband and I, along with our four kids, are happy to be back in the rugged and beautiful wilds of Baranof Island and particularly, Port Alexander, surrounded by miles of remote coastline, sheltered bays, and lonely beaches.

I love sea kayaking, sailing, beachcombing, camping, foraging, dancing, and ocean swims, and would like to soon try my hand at hunting.  I am passionate about good literature, family history and historical research using diverse sources, and teaching-- especially helping young people see options, gain confidence, and be empowered with the skills needed to achieve their dreams.   But not only that-- I love guiding my students in the exploration of ideas and introducing knowledge that expands and enriches their view of the world, making everything they encounter more interesting. I am so happy to be living a dream of mine teaching in, essentially, a mixed-grades one-room schoolhouse!
